Proven Project Management – Creative solutions to housing shortages

Proven Project Management (PPM) and Rowe Group are working closely with their valued client on a groundbreaking project that will deliver more than 390 houses for essential service workers to the Goldfields capital of Kalgoorlie.

It’s the largest of two modular projects currently being managed by the expert team and aimed at helping overcome critical housing shortages in key areas of regional Western Australia.

The second is in central South Hedland where a project including 58 townhouses, 18 short stay apartments and a commercial development has just received development approval, allowing detailed design works to commence.

The construction of both projects will be supplemented by off-site fabrication of dwellings, transported to the regional towns by road and overcoming the material and labour constraints facing more traditional methods of on-site construction.

PPM Project Director Taylor Conway says regional areas are desperate for housing to accommodate essential workers.

He explains that a short supply of regional tradespeople and difficulties in sourcing local materials have forced construction cost to skyrocket for more traditional brick and mortar builds, leaving many housing projects unviable for developers. In addition, in resource hubs like Port Hedland and Kalgoorlie, housing supply is quickly snapped up by mining companies to house their workforces.

That leaves limited housing available to essential service personnel that are required to keep these regional communities operational.

Mr Conway explains that Rowe Group and PPM have successfully been exploring alternate village-based models, combined with offsite fabrication to challenge the typical models of housing delivery in regional areas. In addition, State Government housing programs such as Government Regional Officer Housing (GROH) help ensure the housing supplied across these projects is provided directly to essential workers otherwise priced out of expensive regional housing markets.
